In 2016, the John F. Steinbruck Leadership award was given to two recipients; Pastor Yehiel Curry and Reverend Kelly Chatman. They were both given this award based on their embodiment of community and dedication to justice and inclusivity. Pastor Yehiel Curry commits his time to the youth of his community, for whom he started an educational camp focused on justice and the church. In addition, his church serves as a site for Mobile Produce, a partner of the Greater Chicago Food Depository, providing fresh foods to a community located in a food desert. Reverend Kelly Chatman also focuses on ministry which reaches youth through hospitality, leadership formation, and community building. His church started a bicycle cooperative and a coffee shop in their community to provide opportunities for income and job skills development.
