Our Paradigm

Quality short term immersion trips take planning, intentionality, and flexibility on both the part of The Steinbruck Center and our visiting groups. We have adapted this version of Eight Components of a Quality Alternative Break from Break Away, the national non-profit for alternative breaks.

  • Orientation – The Steinbruck Center will provide students with an orientation to Luther Place Memorial Church and its ministries, including the mission, vision, and programmatic goals of current ministries such as the Community Craft Collective and ArtSmart Summer Camp.
  • Education and experiential learning– The Steinbruck Center works with participants to help them understand the historical, political, and cultural context of the social issues they will be working with during their trip. Education for transformation will take place before, during, and after the trip.
  • Direct Service – The Steinbruck Center will facilitate opportunities for students to engage in direct service or hands-on projects and activities with community partners.
  • Alcohol and drug free – All participants must agree to be drug and alcohol free during the duration of their trip. Luther Place and N St Village are both dry facilities in order to support the sobriety of women in our programs, but this component also tends to issues of legality, liability, personal safety, and group cohesion.
  • Diversity and Racial Equity – Short-term immersion trips are only enhanced by diversity in terms of race, religion, class, gender, age, sexual orientation, and education. We welcome and celebrate inter-generational, inter-faith, and inter-racial groups. We also acknowledge that communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by systems, structures, and policies that have created homelessness and poverty in our city. The Steinbruck Center staff works to illuminate that reality and equip our groups to grapple with how race and poverty intersect.
  • Reflection – Groups are expected to reflect both individually and as a group in order to synthesize their direct service and education, and to better understand the impact and meaning of their service.
  • Reorientation – The Steinbruck Center will facilitate conversations about how to translate the experience back to a group’s home community. We hope that the experience doesn’t end once students return home, but rather that participants will strive to embody active citizenship, placing community as a priority in values and life choices.
